The Youngest Bain EVER!

At least he'll also have Lisa's genes :-)

Have no fear: O-Zone PI is on the case, and he’s the only gumshoe willing to work for milk and rubber giraffes.

It’s time to introduce the O-Zone to solid foods. We filmed his first taste of anything other than milk: sweet potatoes.

He didn’t know what the hell was going on, he was a little tired, and we had him in his “Learn N’ Leap” so he was bouncing everywhere, but he enjoyed the one bite he was willing to try.

Our pediatrician had just told us that it was normal for babies to swat away food at first, which is why we appear a bit “persistent” in our efforts.

Oliver’s instructional pamphlet on how to roll from stomach-to-back.

In a span of 3 days, he’s gone from being afraid (and too weak) to try, to expert status. He can roll to his left or to his right comfortably, and he’s super proud of himself when the roll is finished, and usually in a hurry to try again.

Additionally, last night we put him to bed on his back (as usual), but found him on his stomach this morning.

The only part that’s still sorta tricky about this for him is the throwing the hand up over his head part to get the roll going. If he’s tired, or not sure that he’s got enough space to work with, he gives a half hearted arm toss, and doesn’t finish his roll. He did this four times in a row at the Easons’ last night, then cried in embarrassment :-)

This is a little dated now, but Oliver started day care last month, and he gets a “report card” every day. Their grading is a little different from what you may have seen in high school or college: Where stellar work in the more traditional system is considered an “A,” here it’s considered “BM.”

I’m posting his first card here, for posterity’s sake. He didn’t rack up any BMs on his first day, but he’s quickly made the “dean’s list” in that category since then :-)

Oliver just wrapped up his first vacation, a week-long to Boston and Cape Cod.

A ton of the extended Bain family gather at my father’s home on the Cape every two years, and Oliver arrived just in time to make the trip this year.

I got this neat, waterproof Kodak video camera from my brother, Adam, this summer as a groomsman gift, and decided to put it to use.

I thought it’d be fun to shoot a bunch of short clips to document how Oliver experiences his historic first trip to Boston (also his first Thanksgiving). I figured a number of 3-7 second clips, many from his POV, would put the viewer in Oliver’s world.

The video came out longer than I expected (almost 9 minutes), and I hadn’t realized quite how intrusive I’d feel when I constantly whipped out the camcorder again and again throughout the trip, so the first few days are documented a bit better than the last few, but the video serves its purpose.

It may not be terribly peppy by normal standards for an O-Zone production, but it’ll be fun for historical purposes.

Oliver goes through a range of emotions while his buddy Sam remains stoic.

Oliver’s new trick is waiting until the moment between when I’ve decided to take a picture and when the shutter’s snapped, and bringing up some of his last meal in that sliver of time.

The O-Zone caught the Pats on Monday Night Football, and spent some time talking shop with his grandpa.

I love shooting video through the nice lens we bought for our Canon camera.

Posted 64 miscellaneous “good camera” pics from the last few weeks to a Flickr set. With the move, I got a little behind in taking and uploading pics from the T2i, but looked last night and realized we had some gems.

I’ll get better about taking more of these and getting them up on the site.

One thing that’s becoming clear: for someone who only has a vague sense of what his hands are, Oliver does really funny things with them when the camera’s on.

1st Pats game. The O-Zone was so pumped about Welker’s 2nd TD that he spat up.

The O-Zone at the employee store. If he looks upset, it’s because of a misunderstanding around what an iPad is. He’d thought it would help with his poop issues.

Oliver’s social weekend

This kid’s got quite the appointment book. This weekend he:

When the O-Zone was 6 days old, we took some family pictures.

Lisa Leigh, who also took our wedding photos, remarked at how she’d never seen a baby so young stay so alert for an entire shoot. Oliver gave her a full hour of open eyes and cute mugging. We’d accidentally left his Red Sox gear at home though. We made a quick trip back to get it, and his mood had changed a bit by the time the shoot reconvened.

We should get the results of this shoot back in the next few weeks, and they’ll be all over this site, don’t worry.

Izzy and Martha were kind enough to host a huge get together for all immediately family in town last weekend. Oliver got to meet his cousin, Emily, and got to hear his father rave about applesauce cake for the whole ride home.

I grew up with my extended family far away, so these outings were rare, but they’ll come to feel quite common for the O-Zone.

This shot’s a week old, but it’s a good representation of what home looks like when you have a baby and family comes to visit to check him out. You can really only adore a baby one at a time, so the rest of the gang eats, makes funny faces, and waits their turn.
